Ticks are a major public health concern throughout the state of NJ. They are small insects that carry blood-borne illnesses. These illnesses affect humans, pets, and wildlife. The tick population has been spreading rapidly in Westfield, NJ and the surrounding communities of Watchung and Warren.

Ticks can easily survive through the cold winter months, but you probably will not see them lurking about your yard during this time. In NJ, tick season starts at the end of spring or beginning of summer and lasts all the way until the end of summer when the weather starts to get cooler.
The worst months for ticks in our region tend to be May, June, and July.
In the region of Westfield, Watchung, Warren, and other nearby communities in NJ, there are three common species of ticks with a fourth on the rise. The most prevalent species in the area is the Blacklegged tick or the Deer tick.
The Deer tick is the carrier of Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, and the Powassan virus. American Dog ticks are carriers of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, while the Lone Star tick is known to transmit Ehrlichiosis.
NJ has one of the highest incidences of Lyme disease, second only to Pennsylvania.
The newest species of tick emerging in this region is the Long-horned Tick. This is an exotic tick species from Asia that can spread serious diseases, such as the SFTS virus and the pathogen that leads to Japanese Spotted fever. This tick can transmit diseases to animals and can be transported by domestic animals, livestock, and wildlife, which makes it easy for the ticks to spread.
At Stream Line Lawn & Landscape, we recommend 3-4 preventative tick control treatments per season. Treating your property for ticks, even if you have not seen them, is the best way to be proactive in preventing them from infesting your yard and creating health hazards for your family and pets.
